| Greasy Hair | Greasy hair is a result of excessive secretion of 'grease' or sebum from sebaceous glands in the scalp. The sebum spreads upwards and over the hair shaft through the hair follicle. It is not absorbed into the shaft and is left on the hair. Greasy hair look oily and lifeless. They are oily, because of excessive production of oil. Greasy hair is healthy hair, oil provides the protection of each strand from dryness and split ends. They are not caused by the consummation of oily food.
There are some recommendations for greasy hair: 1) They should be washed with a mild shampoo. 2) It is recommended to apply only an oil free conditioner. 3) Hair care products for greasy hair can slow down oil production. 4) After applying a hair dryer when styling your hair ensure that it is not too hot, because heat leads to the stimulation of excessive oil prodaction. 5) Daily washing is not recommended, because it leads to the overstimulation of the sebaceous glands and the production of more grease onto the hair. It will produce the impression of having greasy hair soon its wash. Frequent washing leads also to the greasy roots and the rest of hair being stripped of oil and the ends getting dry and brittle. So, it is advised to apply a mild ph-balanced shampoo and do not rub the scalp too much while washing. You may only use conditioner to the mid and ends, do not apply it at the roots. 6) Keep to a diet with insignificant quantity of oily and fatty foods that lead to greasy skin and scalp. When you are at home, do not wash your hair daily. Apply a children's shampoo that is mild enough for greasy hair. 7) Choose a shampoo that is designed specially for oily hair or that is extra cleansing or ‘clarifying’. 8) Do not use moisturizing shampoos that leave some quantity of oil in hair as a protection against dryness. 9) It you want to cleanse your hair better, leave the shampoo on your hair for some minutes, than rinse it off. 10) It is recommended to be very gentle while shampooing your head. People, who feel that their hair feels oily or unclean, want to scrub their hair. Such excessive scrubbing and massage leads to the stimulation of the sebaceous glands that produce more sebum. Thus you should only lather and run your finger-tips lightly over your scalp. Then rinse and wash again. 11) Do not brush your hair frequently or vigorously, because it stimulates the sebaceous glands that spread the oil throughout the hair. 12) If you have a necessity to apply a conditioner (oily hair may have dry ends because of chemical processing, sun or wind), you should apply a light conditioner only to the dry ends of the hair. After applying a conditioner you should rinse the hair well.
The production of grease is different at different times. During puberty there are higher levels of male hormones and sebum production is influences. During these periods the hair gets greasier and there is a necessity for more frequent washing. If the grease is removed incorrectly, the problem gets worse. It is not important what the hair style is, because the scalp produces the same quantity of grease. People with short hair suffer more from greasy hair, because the grease is spread over a small area. The glands cannot stop the production of oil, it is recommended to wash hair when it is required to maintain its cleanness. It is recommended to use shampoos designed for greasy hair that remove natural grease without damaging the hair shaft.
