Losing Your Hair

Losing Your Hair
It is known that people lose hair with age. Nevertheless, it is possible to have a hair loss at a young age.
There are two main reasons that can cause hair loss, genetics and hormones. Some people are genetically predisposed to hair loss when exposed to a by-product of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), hormone responsible for the progressive miniaturization of the hair follicle. DHT is available in the body of both men and women. Alopecia or hair loss is immune system disorder when hair follicles stop producing hairs and hair begins to fall out from small patches on the head.

There are some causes that lead to hair loss:
1) Constant Hair Pulling: hair begins constantly falls out as the result of tightly braided hair styles.
2) Delayed growth from Stress: As the result of stress hair begins to grow slower, some time after the stress the hair shedding of the resting follicles is also observed.
3) Sudden Hair Loss: Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy prevent hair follicles’ normal growth and lead to the sudden shedding of hair. Some medications have such side effect as hair loss.
4) Broken Hairs: broken hair continues to grow, but it becomes thinner. Hair shaft breakage can appear as a result of excessive styling, chemicals, sun and chlorine in swimming pools.
5) Nutritional Deficiencies: In rare cases nutritional deficiencies lead to hair loss and weak hair shafts that break off frequently.
6) Hair thinning and loss can also be caused by some chronic diseases, hormone-related irregularities, infections, trauma such as burns and injury to hair follicles. If we know the causes of hair loss, we have more possibilities to stop hair loss.

Hair loss can be stopped by the following measures:
1) Massage your scalp with your fingertips (not your nails) every day for better stimulation and promotion of circulation to your scalp.

2) Comb or brush your hair and scalp gently with about 100 - 200 strokes in the morning and at night to get rid of hardened oils (sebum) clogging your hair follicles and provide the growth of new hair.

3) Using blow dryers, keep the heat a good distance from your head to prevent the scalp and hair from excessive heating.

4) Never use hair creams, lotions, styling gels and sprays directly on the scalp, because it leads to hair follicles being clogged up. It is quite possible to apply a light hold spray.

5) As soon as you have swum in a pool, shampoo your hair to get rid of chlorine residue that damages the hair and scalp very much.

6) Don’t expose your hair and scalp to the wind and sun for a long time.

7) Don’t use tight hats and caps leading to poor circulation that does not provide the hair with proper nutrition. Follicle health can be damaged with sweat, dirt, and grime around the rim.

8) If you suffer from extreme fallout and thinning, consult a doctor who will find out the cause. Hair loss as a side effect can be caused with a medical condition or medication.

9) Try to have balance and harmony in both your personal and professional lifestyle, because stress increases hormone levels that lead to excessive oil secretion (sebum) and hair loss.

10) Your nutritional needs and hormonal levels can be changed with such factors as pregnancy, nursing, menopause and birth control medication that lead to hair loss and fallout.

11) Remember that "crash and fad" diets are rather dangerous for hair. To have healthy hair and skin you should eat proper nutritious meals, vitamin and mineral supplements.
