The hair restoration is the medical process of the transplanting of hair and follicles from a permanent hair-bearing area of the head (the “donor” area) to bald or balding areas of the scalp (the “recipient” area). The transplanted hair regrows to the length it would have grown in the area from which it was taken. It is of the same colour and characteristics as the hair in the donor region from which it was transplanted. Only one area can be treated at a time: the frontal part from the hairline to a line drawn more or less vertically from the ears, the mid-scalp region from the point on the scalp where the head changes from being more or less horizontal to the area to a more vertical orientation, and the vertex region or “crown” which is the balding area located furthest back on the head. Most hair is situated emerge on the scalp in groups of 2 or 3 hairs. 15% of hairs appear as single hairs and about 15% in groups of 4 or 5 hairs. Such small groups of hairs are called Follicular Groups. They are taken in the size of 8 to 10 mm in the form of a wide strip of skin from the donor scalp for transplantation. Only a little scar remains on the donor scalp, but it is completely healed in 7 to10 days. It does not matter how much hair is taken, there is only one scar present in the donor area.
Small bore needles or blades are used for the little and mimic incisions in the recipient area. One should be afraid when all of the transplanted hairs initially falls out within a period of 2 to 3 weeks. It is quite normal. They will regrow in the recipient area about 2 to 3 months. After the procedure of transplantation the available small crusts on the recipient sites fall off as usual from 3 to 10 days. Post-operative pain is nearly always controlled with mild “pain killers” such as Tylenol 3, Vicodin or Percocet which are necessary only during the first 1 or 2 nights after the transplantation. One may also observe temporary swelling of the forehead 2 to 3 days after the operation and which lasts for 3 to 7 days. About 1 out of every 50 patients has no swelling available and 1 out of every 50 patients suffer from severe swelling which leads to “black eyes” that disappear for 7 to 10 days. After the procedure of transplantation such complications as bleeding or infection are extremely rare and can be easily treated. Hair restoration for women is not the same as for men. It is more expensive. Nowadays a good hair transplant doctor can create a picture of natural real hair on the patient’s scalp.
A young man who suffers from hair loss should not have immediate hair transplantation. The process of hair loss may be constant and there will not be enough hair all over the head. Its amount will not be equal. Hair loss may be slowed or new hair may grow after medical hair loss treatments.
