During pregnancy your whole body changes, including your hair. An increasing amount of different hormones often leads to the changes in your hair color, its structure and thickness. Even your hair reaction for any kind of treatment may change.
Women’s hair becomes thicker and glowing during pregnancy. This explains mostly by the increased level of the hormone oestrogen in the body. The cycle of hair growing and coming out is postponed during pregnancy because of this hormone and other physiological processes.
During usual cycle of hair growing and coming out about 90% of hair is in the growing process and 10% of it in the 'rest phase' (they don’t grow in this period). This stage lasts for approximately 60 days before coming out. While pregnancy high oestrogen level diminishes shedding of the hair. As a result- hair of pregnant woman becomes thick and shining. But after giving a birth to a child and quit breast feeding we can observe back reaction – hair starts to come out in large quantities because of its returning to a normal cycle. This is completely normal process.
Also the hair texture often changes during pregnancy. Straight hair turns into curly and vise versa. Dry hair can become drier, even fragile; oily hair often becomes oilier. Pregnant women often have to use new hair care products because of these changes and wait for their baby coming out. The majority of doctors prohibit hair coloring during at least first trimester. It’s time when your baby is most exposed to negative influence; especially this concerns the baby’s neurological system. But this statement is still under question since not enough scientific researches were held in this area. The chemicals composed of dyes are not highly toxic and the baby’s exposure is quite indirect. But still each pregnant woman has to consult her doctor before color her hair.
