Products Used for Chemical Hair Relaxing

The cream applied as a base for relaxing has more advantages comparing with regular petroleum jelly, because it is lighter and melts at body temperatures providing a complete protection against the straightening chemicals covering over the scalp and other desired areas with a oily film.
It is not necessary to use the petroleum creme in softening process. Relaxation without this chemical is possible, when relaxing solutions are mild enough and does not demand the protective petroleum base application.

It is recommended always to apply a protective cream around the hairline and over the delicate ear areas. Do not use a straightening formula to hair that has been previously straightened, because of a high risk of breakage or damage. The hair will then be sectioned and the base cream is used between sections to provide the protection to the scalp and avoid processing, burning and irritation.

The stylist distributes the chemical solution onto hair that is completely dry (if one uses the Thio Relaxer, the hair may be wet). The distribution is performed with hands or some other corresponding straightening tools. If the hair is wet or damp, one should be at fist dried, then the relaxing solution can be used (the exception is the Thio Relaxer). One keeps the relaxing solution only for some minutes, because it is extremely strong. (average time is 5-8 minutes but many factors may influence the duration of the procedure). The duration of the relaxing solution that is left on the hair influences the effectiveness. The longer the chemical is available on the hair, the more damaged the hair will be. Then one combs the solution through the hair and pulls it straight. One should not comb through your hair while the procedure of straightening. Relaxing damages the hair's natural elasticity. As soon as it is combed out, the hair stretching is possible. Such hair can easy be broken, because it is very fragile.

Then one completely shampooes the relaxer and washes it off with warm water (do not apply hot or cold water). After hair wash one applies a neutralizer solution to stop the straightening process and restore the pH balance to the hair. The purpose of a neutralizer is to reharden the fragile hair after relaxating.
It will be very beneficial for hair to apply a good conditioner that restores some of the natural oils that were washed off with the chemicals. As soon as the neutralizer is rinsed out and the hair gets dry with a towel, one uses the conditioner. Then one uses rollers on the hair in and gently dries or styles it. Relaxed hair needs treatment to provide protection to the hair and prolong the effects of the relaxating. Untreated hair gets brittle and stiff. One should rinse out shampoo and other hair products thoroughly, because straightened hair can hold them thanks to its porosity. Be very careful while detangling wet hair, because it is very fragile and can break easily. It is good to apply a good detangling/ leave in conditioning product and a wide brush. Detangle the hair gently from the bottom of your hair up towards the roots. A regular deep conditioning treatment once or twice a week and more is recommended for chemically relaxed hair. It is beneficial for newly relaxed hair that is very dry to apply a moisturizing shampoo designed specially for chemically straightened or treated hair. If you use a leave-in conditioner, rinse it well. Moisture reconstructing treatments are also very beneficial for your hair. Conditioning is useful for hair, because it returns the hair oils and proteins, it makes the hair smooth. Do not apply hot blow dryers and hot styling tools, because they make the hair dry and fragile, prone to damage. If the necessity of a blow dryer’s use arises, one should apply the coolest heat and use a good protective leave in conditioner first.

You may use hot oil treatment as well to retiun hait its strength and elastidy. Apply the warm olive oil on the roots of your hair, wrap the hair in a plastic shower cap, cover it with a hot towel and wait for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. If extra conditioning is required, dry with a towel the hair and use a good leave in conditioner. Remember that sesame and almond oil is much lighter comparing olive oil. Thus, do not use olive oil on colored hair, because it makes hair color fading quicker. It is quite good to keep the hot oil on the hair for longer periods, even for a night.

Straightening can soften and change the texture of the hair. Its duration should not be more than three months. Usually, the duration of a strong relaxing treatment is up to 6 months depending on the hair's texture and growth. One should not color and relax one’s hair simulataneously. Color your hair 2-4 weeks after relaxing.
